About this book

In 1739, a twenty five year old preacher climbed onto a courthouse step in Philadelphia and began to speak. Benjamin Franklin was there, determined not to be moved. By the end of the sermon, Franklin had emptied his own pockets into the collection plate. That preacher was George Whitefield, and within a few short years he would be seen in person by more people than perhaps anyone else alive during the eighteenth century. He preached to twenty thousand miners covered in coal dust outside Bristol. He drew crowds in Boston larger than the entire population of the city. He became, by the assessment of historians, colonial America's first true celebrity, decades before anyone in America had a reason to use that word. This book follows Whitefield from his childhood above a Gloucester tavern, where he learned to serve travelers and, quite by accident, discovered a talent for performance that would later transform him into one of the most electrifying speakers of his age, through his years at Oxford among a small group of ridiculed but devoted students, and into the open fields and crowded city squares where his preaching helped ignite the Great Awakening across Britain and the American colonies. Readers will meet the figures who shaped Whitefield and were shaped by him in turn: Charles and John Wesley, whose partnership with Whitefield would end in a painful theological rift; Jonathan Edwards, whose quiet Massachusetts revival helped prepare the ground for Whitefield's own; Benjamin Franklin, whose decades long friendship with Whitefield combined genuine affection with an unresolved disagreement over faith itself; and Phillis Wheatley, whose poem in Whitefield's memory would carry his name across the Atlantic once more after his death. This is not a story told through comfortable hindsight. Whitefield's life is examined here in its full complexity, including his genuine advocacy for the humane treatment of enslaved people alongside his own troubling role in legalizing slavery in the colony of Georgia, a contradiction this book confronts directly rather than setting aside. Readers looking for an honest, carefully researched account of religious revival, colonial history, and the complicated humanity behind a genuinely transformative historical figure will find that story here, along with a clearer understanding of how one preacher's voice helped shape the cultural and spiritual identity that colonial America would carry into revolution and independence. Whitefield's story is, in the end, a distinctly human one, marked by extraordinary achievement, genuine personal loss, and moral contradiction that resists easy resolution. It offers not just the record of a remarkable life, but a deeper understanding of the era that produced it, and of the ways one individual's convictions, for better and for worse, can ripple outward across generations.
