Here I Stand Before the Emperor

About this book

In April 1521, Martin Luther entered the city of Worms to answer before princes, church leaders, and the young Emperor Charles V. His books were placed before him, and he was commanded to take back what he had written.Luther did not answer carelessly. He asked for another day to consider his words. When he returned, he explained that his conscience was captive to the Word of God. He was willing to be corrected from Holy Scripture-but he could not deny what Scripture taught. His confession has been remembered for generations in the words: "Here I stand."This richly illustrated children's book carries young readers into the crowded streets of Worms, the magnificent imperial hall, Luther's dangerous journey home, and his secret refuge in the Wartburg.Written for children ages 7-11 and their families, Here I Stand Before the Emperor combines vivid storytelling, careful history, and clear Lutheran teaching. Luther is not presented as a man who saved himself through courage. His confidence rested upon Jesus Christ, who died and rose for sinners, and upon God's sure and everlasting Word.Includes a catechetical guide for parents and children with Bible readings, discussion questions, and prayer.
