A Whole Lotta History

About this book

From music journalist and co-chief content officer at Billboard Jason Lipshutz, a captivating cultural history of the boy band sensation One Direction, featuring exclusive new interviews with their key collaborators. Over 70 million records sold worldwide. Multiple sold-out tours played to millions of screaming fans. The first British band to enter the Billboard 200 at number one with their debut album. The first band in history to have their first four studio albums debut atop the chart. No, it's not the Beatles--it's One Direction. Over fifteen years after Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson sweated under the bright lights of The X Factor stage, One Direction refuses to burn out like the usual, ephemeral boy band flame, with over 58 million monthly Spotify listeners today and its members covering 1D songs on their own sprawling solo tours. Yet for such an undeniable cultural force, One Direction's musical journey has never been given its proper due. Drawing on his extensive coverage of One Direction's rise and breakout success, in A Whole Lotta History, Jason Lipshutz brings an authoritative voice to the band's story, blending detailed analysis of 1D's discography, with never-before-told anecdotes and exclusive new interviews with their key collaborators. Alongside the music, he chronicles their deeply personal relationship with their fans--one few bands or musicians ever get to experience--perfectly capturing an era in not just music but pop culture at large. Combining vivid storytelling with sharp musical insights, A Whole Lotta History is a celebration and commemoration of One Direction's place in pop history--necessary reading for the millions of fans who still remember the first time they heard "Baby, you light up my world like nobody else," and have never stopped listening.
