The Counterwritten

About this book

The summer of 1979 was supposed to be their last chance to be kids. Then something started writing back.Fourteen-year-old Wilder has always noticed things other people miss. Shadows where none should fall. Changes that happen when no one is looking. And after a mysterious key leads him and his friends to the grave of a woman who died more than a century ago, the impossible becomes much harder to ignore.Soon, Wilder, Jasper, Simon, and Corinne are each being haunted by something different. A voice beneath the water. A woman with silver hair. Shadows carrying glimpses of lives that were never lived. And the apparition of Eliza Shroud, a young woman born in 1852 whose connection to the four of them seems anything but accidental. As their ordinary Indiana summer gives way to something far more dangerous, the friends uncover evidence of Oneirion, a place beyond their world where stories are more than stories and the beings who write them can reach into reality itself. They call themselves the Writers. And they have been watching. To survive, four teenagers who are still trying to understand themselves must learn whom to trust, what to believe, and whether the darkest parts of their lives were ever truly theirs alone.Because someone already knows how their stories are supposed to end.And the only way to change the ending may be to enter the story themselves.
