Before You Decide You're the Problem

About this book

Medical school can turn one hard moment into a global verdict: I'm behind. I'm not ready. Maybe I'm the problem. Before You Decide You're the Problem offers a calmer, more accurate way to interpret struggle, feedback, and changing performance in medical training. Rather than treating every difficult performance as evidence of a larger problem-or dismissing real gaps-the book helps readers separate what happened from what they decided it meant.Across preclinical study and clinical training, Laura Woodward, Ph.D., shows medical students how to ask what changed, where a performance broke down, what the available evidence actually supports, and what kind of response fits the problem.Readers learn to distinguish among knowledge gaps, difficulty accessing what they know, problems with prioritization or execution, unclear expectations, and environmental demands. The book also examines feedback, changing responsibility, hidden rules, help-seeking, uncertainty, and the experience of learning while being evaluated. The goal is not reassurance. It is accuracy: a working hypothesis, a proportionate response, and a way to learn from what happens next.Written for medical students navigating pressure, uncertainty, feedback, and change, this book offers a practical framework for understanding difficult moments without turning them into a verdict about ability, belonging, or the future.
