Pentagon 9-11

About this book

He was appointed senior enlisted advisor for relief and recovery at the Pentagon within hours of the attack. What he carried out of that parking lot never fully left him.Roger A. Woody grew up in a one-bathroom house in Gallatin, Missouri, where hard work and quiet integrity were the only inheritance that mattered. Thirty years later, as a Chief Master Sergeant, he stood in the wreckage of the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, helping coordinate the search, recovery, and identification of the dead. What he witnessed there, and the sanitized version he was asked to repeat in the years that followed, opened a fracture between what he knew and what he was permitted to say.Pentagon 9/11 is the story of that fracture, and of the long road back from it. Woody writes with unflinching honesty about moral injury: the wound that comes not from what you did, but from what you were forced to witness and carry in silence. From the chaos of Camp Unity to a sixteen-week VA program that finally gave him language for what he'd been living with for two decades, this memoir traces one man's reckoning with truth, trust, and what it really means to come home.Raw, disciplined, and deeply human, this is a book for veterans who've carried their own unspoken weight, and for anyone who wants to understand the quiet cost of service that never shows up in the official record. Some scars you can't see. This book makes them visible.
