Inspirational journey of Saint Agnes of Bohemia
About this book
Agnes was the daughter of King Ottokar I of Bohemia. At the age of three, she was betrothed to Boleslaus, and after his death, she was engaged at the age of nine to Henry, the son of Emperor Frederick II. Agnes rejoiced when Henry eventually married the daughter of the Duke of Austria, as she had already consecrated herself to God, aspiring to live a life of austerity, virginity, and devotion.Later, her brother arranged a marriage to Frederick, but in 1235, when Frederick sought to claim her, Agnes petitioned Pope Gregory IX for assistance. The Pope intervened, and Frederick released her from the engagement, allowing her to pursue her sacred calling. In 1236, she founded a convent for the Friars Minor in Prague, staffed by five nuns sent by St. Clare, and took the veil herself. Shortly after, she was appointed abbess and became widely admired for her humility, charitable works, and steadfast commitment to poverty. Agnes passed away in Prague on March 2, 1282. Her canonization by Pope John Paul II in 1989 recognized her exemplary life of holiness and service.
