Transformation of the Christian Heart

About this book

How does a Christian actually become more like Jesus? The Christian life does not end at conversion. It begins there. From the moment God gives us a new heart, he is at work through the Holy Spirit, conforming us to the image of Christ-not only changing what we believe and do, but transforming what we are.Yet many sincere Christians know far more about "getting saved" than about growing afterward. We try harder, resolve to do better, and become discouraged when lasting change does not come. But spiritual formation is neither self-improvement nor an achievement of human willpower. God is the one who transforms us, even as he calls us to cooperate with his work.In nine biblically grounded lessons, Transformation of the Christian Heart explores: the place of sanctification within our salvation; how spiritual transformation takes place; the barriers that keep dedicated believers from growing; what it means to abide in Christ; how God uses suffering and forgiveness in our formation; the proper role of spiritual disciplines; and how to develop a practical rule of life. At the center of the book is Jesus' image of the vine and the branches: "Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."Each lesson includes a substantial reading, a comprehensive teaching outline, a prayer project, discussion questions, and a comprehension quiz. Designed for church classes, small groups, or individual study, this is a book to be worked through-not merely read. The goal is not simply to know more about spiritual formation, but to abide more deeply in Christ and to be conformed, day by day, into his likeness.
