The Desert Fathers for Kids

About this book

Most saints' books for kids tell the famous stories. This one goes somewhere most of them don't.Centuries before the well-known saints, there was a stranger and more demanding tradition: men and women who walked into the Egyptian desert and stayed there for the rest of their lives, not because they were running from something, but because they were chasing something the world couldn't give them. The Desert Fathers for Kids introduces children ages 8-12 to twelve of these figures, told as real stories rather than polished legends: Anthony the Great, who gave away his entire inheritance and sealed himself inside an abandoned fort for twenty years Abba Moses, a violent gang leader who became one of the most respected elders in the desert Amma Syncletica, who turned down marriage and wealth to live in a tomb Abba Sisoes, who spent seventy-two years in prayer and, at the very end, said he hadn't even begun Each chapter ends with a short reflection that invites kids to sit with what they've just read instead of rushing past it.Inside the book: Twelve full chapters on the most important figures of the Desert Fathers and Mothers tradition A reflection prompt at the end of every chapter, built for real conversation, not lecture A glossary of desert terms for curious readers A 30-day reading plan that works for homeschool or family devotion time Guidance for parents and educators on using the book at home or in the classroom These stories have survived seventeen hundred years of being passed from person to person because somebody, in every generation, decided they were worth keeping. This book hands them to your child intact, strange, demanding, and unforgettable, exactly as they were meant to be.
