Operation Greenhouse

About this book

Operation Greenhouse is a powerful firsthand memoir by John Siko about his experiences as a young sailor aboard the USS Walker during the historic nuclear testing program known as Operation Greenhouse in 1951. At only seventeen years old, Siko found himself stationed at Enewetak Atoll, where he witnessed four nuclear detonations that became significant milestones in the early Cold War. Through his personal memories, the book captures the fear, awe, friendship, duty, and uncertainty experienced by ordinary servicemen placed at the center of an extraordinary moment in history.
