First 1000 Days

About this book

★ A Kirkus Star recipient, praised as "...a wonderfully accessible and wide-ranging guide to helping babies eat right."The health destiny of our children is largely determined by what happens during their first three years of life.Food allergies. Eczema. Autoimmune disease. ADHD. Autism. Early-onset cancer. These conditions are rising at alarming rates in younger generations--and emerging science points to a critical, overlooked cause: the gut microbiome, and how it develops in a child's earliest days.In First 1,000 Days, Yale-trained gastroenterologist Dr. Savita Srivastava reveals how the trillions of microbes colonizing your baby's gut act as a hidden "super-organ"--one that trains the immune system, shapes metabolism, and influences brain development. And the window to nurture it is narrower than most parents realize: after age three, a child's microbiome is largely set.Drawing on cutting-edge research and decades of clinical experience, Dr. Srivastava offers a compassionate, judgment-free roadmap for every family--C-section or vaginal birth, breast milk or formula, antibiotics or without. This is not a book about perfection. It's a book about possibility.First 1,000 Days gives parents the science they need and the practical tools to use it--without guilt.Dr. Savita Srivastava, MD is a Yale-trained gastroenterologist and microbiome specialist with decades of clinical experience in preventive health.
