Light From the Burial Ground

About this book

Light From the Burial Ground is a collection of contemplative poems in dialogue with Evagrius of Pontus and the desert Christian tradition. Moving between the cities, wilderness, spiritual struggles, and luminous disciplines of an imagined Evagrius, Rita Teschner Powell explores prayer as a practice of body, mind, and spirit. These poems attend closely to stones, wind, water, desire, memory, and the created world as a living text through which God may be encountered. At once intellectually searching and sensuously alive, the collection invites readers into an older discipline of attention: to go outside, to listen, and to discover the light that remains even within the burial ground.
