The UDL Shift

About this book

Making the Shift to UDL Has Never Been Easier!Whether you're already familiar with UDL and looking for new ideas to inspire you or brand-new to UDL and ready for a deep dive into a design framework that will change the way you think about nearly everything, Katie Novak's seventeenth book has you covered. Since her first book, the educational landscape has changed: Student populations are more diverse, cognitive science is rapidly evolving, and technology (including artificial intelligence) is transforming how we design and deliver instruction. The UDL Shift brings together everything Novak has learned in nearly twenty-five years of education, in the hope that it may help you take the next step in this beautiful adventure of teaching and learning. The book is a journey from mindset to methodology, intended to provide you with practical strategies to support you in your role. In part 1, you'll be introduced to the three Universal Design for Learning (UDL) tenets-variability is the rule, firm goals are met with flexible means, and learner agency is essential-and explore why one-size-fits-all instruction doesn't meet the needs of all learners. In part 2, you'll better understand how to set firm goals, design flexible pathways, and build agency into daily routines, improving the outcomes for learners and creating more balance for yourself. In part 3, you'll take on the bigger systems, including how to adapt adopted curriculum, prepare students for high-stakes assessments without narrowing learning, and influence systems to better support classroom practice. And in part 4, it all comes together with a fleshed-out UDL Planning Protocol so you feel ready to transform your classroom, one-on-one sessions with students, or faculty meetings
