Antitheses of Marcion

About this book

Have you ever wondered why early Christian leaders fought so fiercely over the nature of God?What if the very foundations of your faith were built upon a theological battlefield? In Antitheses, Marcion of Sinope presents one of the most controversial and provocative arguments in religious history. Written in the second century, this lost, forbidden text sought to permanently sever the ties between the Old and New Testaments. Marcion argued that the demanding, often wrathful creator God of the Hebrew scriptures could not possibly be the same supreme being of pure, unconditional love introduced by Jesus Christ. This radical dichotomy-the antitheses between law and grace, justice and mercy, fear and love-ignited a firestorm that divided the early Church.Condemned as heresy, Marcion's teachings were systematically suppressed, and his original writings were destroyed by orthodox authorities. Yet, his ideas were so powerful that they forced the early Church to formalize its own biblical canon. This meticulous modern translation and reconstruction pieces together the fragmented remnants of Marcion's profound theological challenge, offering readers an unprecedented look into the schisms that defined early Christianity.Far more than a suppressed artifact of antiquity, Antitheses delves deeply into the philosophical problem of evil, the nature of divine justice, and the true character of the Divine. It asks challenging questions about biblical consistency that readers and theologians still wrestle with today. What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation: The Radical Separation of Two Gods - Explore Marcion's central thesis contrasting the stern Demiurge of the Old Testament with the loving Father of the New Testament.
