Apostolic Fathers

About this book

Have you ever wondered why the early Christian Church survived against all odds after the death of the Apostles? In The Apostolic Fathers, you are invited to explore the primary source documents that bridge the gap between the New Testament and the established Church of the later centuries. This comprehensive collection features the voices of the immediate successors to the Apostles-men who were taught by the very eyes and ears that witnessed the ministry of Christ. These were the leaders, martyrs, and visionaries who navigated the Church through its first great internal and external crises, defining what it meant to be a follower of the Way in a hostile pagan world. This volume assembles every major work from this pivotal era, including the First and Second Epistles of Clement, the Seven Epistles of Ignatius of Antioch, the Epistle of Polycarp, the Didache (The Lord's Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles), the Epistle of Barnabas, the Papias fragments, and the Shepherd of Hermas. Unlike later theological treatises, these writings are urgent, pastoral, and deeply personal. They reveal the struggles over Church organization, the fight against early heresies, the development of the Eucharist, and the unwavering courage of those facing the lion's den. This modern edition brings these ancient Greek and Latin treasures to life for today's readers, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the actual words that formed the bedrock of Christian civilization.
