Gospel of the Nazareans

About this book

Have you ever wondered why the earliest followers of Jesus, who lived alongside him and shared his Jewish heritage, eventually disappeared from official church history? In the Gospel of the Nazareans, you will discover a fascinating and vital piece of early Christian history that challenges the conventional narrative of the developing church. Before Christianity spread across the Roman Empire as a predominantly Greek-speaking, Gentile religion, its heart was in Jerusalem. The earliest believers-known as the Nazareans-continued to observe Jewish laws, customs, and traditions while following the teachings of Jesus. Their sacred text, deeply rooted in Semitic culture, offered a familiar yet distinctively alternative view of the messiah's life and ministry.Far more than a simple historical footnote, this collection of surviving fragments reveals unique expansions on familiar biblical stories, including the rich background of the man with the withered hand, distinct variations of the Lord's Prayer, and alternative accounts of Jesus's trial and resurrection.By gathering the surviving quotations scattered across the writings of ancient theologians like Jerome and Epiphanius, this book reconstructs the spirit and message of a community that lived at the very crossroads of Judaism and early Christianity. What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation: The Forgotten Sayings of Jesus Explore unique teachings, parables, and dialogues attributed to Christ that were preserved by the Nazarene sect but absent from the canonical New Testament.
