In the Long Shadows

About this book

"This series opener welcomes readers to the intense and wondrous world of the Great Turtle." --KIRKUS REVIEWS "Themes of balance and resilience dominate--predator and prey, hunting out of necessity not cruelty, and respect for nature are included in this beautifully written story." --SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL The first book in a richly epic fantasy series from a unique new voice with a powerful point of view. For fans of To Shape a Dragon's Breath and The Marrow Thieves. Leaf grew up wandering the forests of the Turtle, exploring the stonefolk's cursed ruins, and listening to her grandmother's stories. As a child, Koomis was imprisoned with other children of the clans in the stone buildings that still scar the forest floor. When Leaf finds a mysterious object left behind by the vanished invaders, she risks banishment by bringing it back to the Elderglade. It is only Ash, a Watcher sworn to protect the clans' people, who will help her. Together, the two girls set out on a dangerous journey searching for answers. Far away, across the Broken Waters, an orphan named Reed dreams of escape from the Flotilla--a makeshift land of floating ships. When his chance comes to lie his way onto a departing ship, Reed doesn't hesitate, tying his fate to the mysterious crew--including Finch, a girl who seems to see right through his deceit. Together, they set out on a course that will lead them to the Great Turtle. Follow four young people destined to meet as they seek the truth that lies in the shadows of the stories they've been told.
