The Church on the Street

About this book

"In 'The Church on the Street' Deacon Robert Kinghorn leads us on a compelling and inspiring journey through the streets of Toronto, as he offers powerful witness to the values of the Gospel amid the dire circumstances faced by growing numbers of people. 'The Church on the Street' is necessary reading for all members of the clergy, those involved in active ministry, and for all who may be inspired to help bring the love, light and mercy of Christ to those who struggle within the margins of our society." Monsignor A. Robert Nusca, President, St. Augustine's Seminary "Many years ago, I recall watching a television interview of a young woman who was living on the streets. Most people walked by her as quickly as possible so as to avoid being asked for help. Others would hastily drop some coins in her basket as they hurried uncomfortably past. One man walked up to her, bent down in front of her and looked at her directly in the eyes. With deep concern, he asked how she was doing. The young woman broke down in tears because it was the first time that someone actually acknowledged her existence. Each one of us longs to be known and acknowledged. The wise Deacon's stories reveal the good that can happen when we stop, look and listen to our neighbour in need. The Gospel calls us to see Jesus in others. Do we? Are we even looking? The 'Church on the Street' is both a consolation and a challenge for us who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ." Father Peter Turrone, Holy Rosary Parish"Deacon Robert has persevered faithfully in his 'ministry of presence' to those he meets on the streets for over 20 years. In this book, you will encounter some of the people whose lives have touched his own and discover that when we take the time to listen, we find that everyone carries a story worth hearing."Deacon Mike Walsh, Executive Director, National Catholic Broadcasting Council
