Sun-Dial Sayings

About this book

"Sun-Dial Sayings" is a contemplative collection of the diverse mottos and inscriptions traditionally found on sundials, compiled to highlight the historical intersection of timekeeping and human reflection. Curated by John Charles Hill, the work gathers a variety of aphorisms that have historically graced these ancient instruments, offering profound insights into how different generations have perceived the passing hours. These sayings range from the deeply philosophical to the poignantly simple, often focusing on themes of light, shadow, and the inevitable flow of time. The book provides a fascinating window into the tradition of garden and architectural inscriptions, where the sundial serves as more than a mere tool for measurement; it becomes a monument to wisdom and mortality. By documenting these "sayings," Hill captures a unique form of folk literature that emphasizes the value of the present moment. Readers will find a wealth of inspiration in these brief lines, which reflect a timeless spiritual and moral guidance. "Sun-Dial Sayings" is an evocative resource for anyone interested in the art of the aphorism, historical epigraphy, or the quiet beauty of sun-drenched gardens. This collection stands as a testament to the enduring human desire to find meaning in the rhythm of the celestial world and the fleeting nature of the day. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
