Emotionally Healthy Success

About this book

The way we define success is breaking us. And we're being invited into a health modeled by Jesus. In Emotionally Healthy Success, Peter Scazzero launches a quiet revolution--calling leaders to reject the world's metrics of speed, growth, and applause for Jesus' slower, deeper way. Drawing from hard-won lessons as a pastor and founder of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, he charts a practical path toward deep transformation--one that reshapes your inner life, your team, and your church for lasting impact. How we define success matters because there are real consequences for getting it wrong. When we measure success by numbers and image, we inevitably invest our best energies in quick returns, short-term fixes, and an anxious search for the next "big thing." In the process, we damage ourselves and those we lead. More importantly, we drift from Jesus' upside-down way--where the first are last, power is found in weakness, and faithfulness counts more than fame.Scazzero invites us into the Jesus revolution of success no one saw coming--a radical reorientation of leadership around his life and teaching. Through four defining reversals, he unveils a new way of leading marked by slowing down, attuning and listening in prayer, embracing limits, and finding God's power in hiddenness rather than charisma or strategy. At the heart of the book lies The Emotionally Healthy Scorecard for Success, a fresh framework drawn from more than thirty years of global ministry. It introduces eight markers for Personal Formation--the inner life of integrity, rest, and surrender--and eight markers for Culture Formation--the outward fruit of emotionally healthy leadership that shapes marriages, teams, and entire congregations. Together, they redefine what fruitfulness and long-term missional impact truly look like in God's kingdom. Finally, Scazzero calls leaders to embrace a Rule of Life strong enough to hold the weight of their calling, recovering the church's ancient monastic DNA for the formation of today's pastors, staff, and volunteers. He then shows how to ruthlessly reset the way we live and lead, putting first things first so that both our personal lives and our communities can flourish.Emotionally Healthy Success is a prophetic yet deeply practical invitation for every kind of leader--from small group leaders to board members to lead pastors--to trade exhaustion for wholeness, image for integrity, and hurried results for fruit that will last for generations.
